During the official visit to sign the agreement, President Hamid Karzai, was accompanied by a delegation consisted of Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Zalmai Rassoul, National Security adviser, Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta, Ambassador of Afghanistan to the Nordic countries, Mrs. Manizha Bakhtari, and other high ranking Government officials.
The primary topic of President Karzai's official state visit was Denmark's military and civil engagement in Afghanistan and Denmark’s commitment to remain engaged in Afghanistan after the Danish and international troops leave the country.
The agreement pledges Denmark's commitment to help further developments in Afghanistan. Denmark has committed itself to put a greater focus on efforts to aid civil society in Afghanistan after its military engagement ends. The Danish government will contribute to the development of the Afghan police force and will give more than two billion kroner to Afghanistan as financial support.
During the visit President Karzai had discussions with H.E. the Queen of Denmark Margrethe II, Prime Minister Thorning-Schmidt, Foreign Minister Villy Søvndal, Defense and Development Cooperation Ministers as well as with the head of Foreign Relations Committee of Danish Parliament.
In the discussions Prime Minister Thorning-Schmidt said. "Denmark has been deeply engaged in Afghanistan for more than eleven years, therefore it is only natural that we sign a strategic partnership agreement that will seal a mutual desire for long-term co-operation between our countries." Afghanistan have come a long way in developing through a positive direction and we hope that Afghanistan and Afghan people take full responsibility for their political, social and economic development after 2014, and will be also responsible to maintain its own security situation", Prime Minister Thorning-Schmidt added.
The Danish authorities assured that Denmark will continue its financial aid and assistance in training of the Afghan security forces after 2014 and support the Afghan Government in their efforts on developing in Political, Social and economic areas.
President Karzai in return thanked Prime Minister Thorning-Schmidt and the Danish People for Denmark's extremely valuable contribution. President Karzai called the signature of the strategic long-term cooperation agreement as a new chapter in cooperation between the two nations and noted that Denmark development assistance to Afghanistan has been very instrument and effective. H.E. in the discussions with Danish authorities also asked Denmark to direct its further assistance to Afghanistan in areas such as education, rural development, women and children protection.
H.E. the President also added that the Afghans praise the financial and human sacrifices which have been made for the purpose of ensuring peace and development in Afghanistan expressing sympathies for the families of those Danish soldiers having lost their lives in the war in Afghanistan.
The meeting was successfully completed and the two respective countries look forward to a long lasting partnership.
