H.E. Dr. Mohammad Jalil Shams
Minister of Economy
Mohammad Jalil Shams was educated in three
countries - Afghanistan, Egypt and Germany. He graduated from Sultan
Ghias-ud-din Ghoori High School, Herat in 1958, and completed a
Bachelor's Degree at Cairo University, Egypt in 1964. He later moved to
Germany, where he received a diploma in Economics in 1969.
Additionally, Ms, Shams received a Doctorate in Economics from Bochum
University, Germany in 1973.
Mr. Shams served as Assistant Professor at the School of Economics at Kabul University from 1964 to 1966. From 1969 to 1971, he held the post of Vice President in Banke Milli-e-Afghan, Hamburg. He worked at the Afghan National Bank in London as Managing Director from 1971-1974, and from 1973 to 1974 he served as a Lecturer in economics at Essen Polytechnic in Germany.
In 1992-1994, Mr. Shams was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan. He resigned in protest against the internal conflict in Afghanistan. In September 2005, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Energy and Water. He was appointed Minister of Economy in August 2006.
