Ambassador Ludin welcomes increased contribution from Norway

Press Statement attributable to H.E. Ambassador Jawed Ludin
Oslo, January 14th, 2008

Updated: (1.14.2008)

On behalf of the people of Afghanistan and of His Excellency President Hamid Karzai, I welcome the announcement today by the Government of Norway about its intention to significantly increase Norwegian civilian contribution to the rebuilding of Afghanistan. I hope that this plan by the Government of Norway will receive full support from across the Norwegian political spectrum when it is presented to the Stortinget next month.

As announced today by His Excellency Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in Oslo, the additional contribution will bring Norwegian annual civilian aid to Afghanistan for 2008 to a total of 750 million Norwegian kroner. This is an extremely generous contribution that will go a long way towards addressing some of the most pressing reconstruction priorities in Afghanistan.

I also take this opportunity to convey the deep gratitude of the Afghan people to the people of Norway for their generosity and their steadfast support over the past years. In addition to the generous civilian contribution, Norwegian men and women in uniform are playing an invaluable role in making the lives of our people secure, for which we are grateful.

I am confident that, with the continued support of Norway, alongside the rest of the international community, our shared goal of rebuilding Afghanistan into a stable, prosperous and democratic country will be achieved.

Jawed Ludin
Ambassador of Afghanistan to the Nordic Countries, Oslo
