Ambassador Ludin expresses condolances for loss of two Danish soldiers in suicide attack
Press Statement attributable to H.E. Ambassador Jawed Ludin
Oslo, March 17th, 2008
On behalf of President Hamid Karzai and the people of Afghanistan, I express my deepest condolences to the people of Denmark for the loss of two Danish soldiers in Afghanistan today. The two soldiers, who were part of the Danish CIMIC team in southern Afghanistan, were killed by a suicide bomber when on patrol in the city of Gereshk in the Helmand Province. The attack also killed three Afghan citizens and at least one other ISAF soldier, and wounded several others.
Thanks to the valuable service that Danish soldiers, alongside those from Great Britain and other countries, are offering in Helmand, the terrorists have lost the space to present a major challenge to security and as a result we are seeing in Helmand that the lives of people in the Province and the Southern areas in general have improved greatly. It is this improvement that the terrorists cannot tolerate and leads them to commit desperate suicide attack. But these despicable acts will not defer the Afghan people or our friends in the International Community.
The people of Afghanistan honour the memory of the two brave soldiers who laid down their lives for the cause of peace in our country. We are also grateful to the people of Denmark for their steadfast support to Afghanistan as we rebuild our country into a stable and democratic nation.
The sacrifice offered by the Danish soldiers exemplifies the deep commitment of the Danish people to help a country.
