Finnish NGOs in Afghanistan
The Embassy of Finland in Kabul works with a number of local NGOs. The
Finnish Lutheran Overseas Mission (FLOM) is an NGO with several ongoing
projects in Afghanistan.
The FLOM, working with the International Assistance Mission, have received smaller amounts usually under € 100 000 for their work on counter-narcotics, community development projects basic capacity building and health care. Other small Christian organizations, like the Finnish Free Churches and the Christian Charitable Trust (SERVE) has also received small funds. Humble contributions to UNIFEM were also made for the year 2008, and also through the Finnish Red Cross. The overall tendency in Finnish NGO cooperation seems to have been that contributions are gradually decreasing as more and more Finnish funds are channelled through the ARTF or through UNAMA. This is all in accordance with the Afghanistan Compact and the general Plan of Action for Nordic Cooperation in Afghanistan as of April 2008, and it is likely that this tendency will continue.
