Afghan Minister of Education praises Norwegian effort in Afghanistan

Norwegian soldiers are making sure that our children can go to school. Norway has led the international efforts in creating a better balance between civilian and military development in Afghanistan, said Afghan Minister of Education, Haneef Atmar, during a meeting with Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg today.

Next to the general situation in Afghanistan, the reconstruction of the civilian sector was one of the key themes in their conversation, with a special emphasis on schooling and education.

- Meeting with Afghanistan’s Minister of Education today gave me the certainty that our contributions are of big importance to the reconstruction of Afghanistan. If children are to be able to go to school, it requires that schools are built and that the learning materials are in place. Without security there will be no development. ISAF’s core mission is to make sure that development is possible and that civilian projects can be implanted, said Prime Minister Stoltenberg.

- In 2001 only one million children attended school in Afghanistan. It was only boys. Today some 6 million children are attending school and a third of these are girls. This tells me that positive developments are taking place in Afghanistan. I am proud to say that Norway is one of the biggest contributors, per capita, to Afghanistan. We have contributed to the construction of 82 schools in the Faryab province and we have donated 470 million NOK in 2007, and totally 2.6 billion NOK since 2000, Stoltenberg concluded.
