Afghanistan wins first Olympic medal
Fans had gathered to celebrate as Afghanistan's first ever Olympic medalists returned from Beijing.
Afghan sports fans had gathered to celebrate as the country's first ever Olympic medalist returned home. Deputy president Abdul Karim Khalili and the family members of the country’s first every Olympic medalist, Rohullah Nikpai, greeted the athletes as they touched down in Kabul International airport on Thursday.
Taekwondo superstar Nikpai, who defeated the world champion to win the bronze medal in China, was given a house by President Karzai, USD 30 000 by the mobile phone company AWCC, and a brand new Toyota by the Alokozay tea company for his stunning victory.
Nikpai beat Spanish rival and two-time world champion Juan Antonio Ramos 4-1 in the Men’s taekwondo 58kg class on Wednesday, winning joint bronze with Chu Mu-Yen of Chinese Taipei.
Four Afghan athletes and a handful of Afghan sport officials had travelled to Beijing to participate in the 2008 Olympics.The medal catapulted Afghanistan into the medal table for the first time in Olympic history.
