Hamid Karzai has been declared winner of Election by the Independent Elections Commission of Afghanistan
The Independent Elections Commission announcement comes after Dr. Abdullah Abdullah former Minister Foreign Affair, decided not to participate in the second round of elections.
The Independent Elections Commission's announcement comes after Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, decided not to participate in the second round of elections.
Mr. Azizullah Ludin, head of the Independent Elections Commission said that unfortunately one of the candidates has announced to pull out of the 7th November elections. The commisioners of the Independent Election Commission unanimously decided to cancel the second round of elections. Since Mr. Hamid Karzai remains as the only candidate for the second round of elections, therefore, he is declared as the President of Afghanistan.
The day before yesterday, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, one of the two candidates for the second round of elections announced to withdraw from the poll after his conditions were not met. After two months of reviewing fraud allegations in the first round of the Presidential elections, the Election Complaint Commission announced a part of the votes invalid. According to primary results Mr. Hamid Kazai received 55 percent of the total votes casted in the first round of the Presidential election, but in the result of the Election Complaint Commission's review Mr.Karzai's votes fell below 50 percent. Based on the final result announced by the Elections Complaint Commission, the second round of election was supposed to be held on the 7th November 2009 between the two leading candidates.
Mr. Ludin said: “We declare Hamid Karzai winner of the Afghan election because he got the majority of votes in the first round of elections and is the only candidate for the second round of election.”
The decision was announced after the Election Commission officially said that the second round of presidential elections has been cancelled.
