H.E. Mohammed Fahim

First Vice President




H.E. Marshal Mohammad Qasim Fahim, son of Molavi Abdul Matin, was born in 1957 at Omarz Valley of Panjshir Province in Afghanistan. He graduated in Islamic Sharia studies from the Arabic Institute at Kabul in 1977.

After Russia invaded Afghanistan, he went to Peshawar in Pakistan for a short while. In 1978, after returning to Afghanistan, H.E. Fahim joined Mojahedin groups and Ahmad Shah Massoud in the Panjshir Province in Northern Afghanistan.

H.E. Fahim has served his country in many fields as an Afghan military commander and politician. With the collapse of the pro-Soviet regime in Kabul in 1992, H.E. Fahim was appointed as Head of Afghanistan’s Intelligence Service, under the interim President Sibghatullah Mojaddedi, and he continued to serve in this position under President Burhanuddin Rabbani.

In November 2009, H.E. Fahim was appointed as First Vice President. He was the Defense Minister of the Afghan transitional administration, in the beginning of 2002, and he also served as Vice President from June 2002 to December 2004.

H.E. Fahim is fluent in Persian, Pashto and Arabic.
