Oslo, Norway

On behalf of the people of Afghanistan and His Excellency President Hamid Karzai, I welcome the announcement by the government of Norway regarding its contribution of 15 million Norwegian kroner for this year to support Afghanistan’s upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for 2009 and 2010 respectively.

As announced yesterday by His Excellency Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr-Støre in Oslo, this contribution of Norway to support the elections in Afghanistan is in order to ensure women’s participation in the elections. In addition, this will enable the people of Afghanistan to participate in a democratic political process to strengthen the newly established democracy in Afghanistan.

I would also like to take this opportunity to convey the deep gratitude of the Afghan people to the people of Norway for their generosity and steadfast support over the past years. The contribution announced by the Norwegian Government exemplifies the deep commitment of the Norwegian People to help Afghanistan and its democratic process.
