Afghan Government promises education to all

The Minister of Education, Ghulam Farooq Wardak, said despite the Afghan government's success in education, five million children and adults still have no access to education due to security and economic reasons. He added, eleven million Afghans are deprived of literacy.

Meanwhile President Karzai urged the Taliban not to prevent children from going to school. He also asked all students to work hard and learn more to better serve the country in the future. President Karzai officially started the new educational year by ringing the school bell today. The MoE has called the next solar year, a better year for education.

Minister Wardak said that despite the government's numerous achievements in the field of education, 650 schools were closed due to security reasons in south and south-eastern provinces. Thus, 400 000 students had been deprived of going to school last year.

According to Minister Wardak, 77 percent of teachers do not meet the educational standard requirements, and 50 percent of school buildings are still not ready for use.

The increase of teacher-training centers, efforts in re-opening the schools, attracting five thousand bachelors degree graduates as teachers and government employees, increasing the education quality, distributing residential lands and new plans for solving the teachers economic problems are among the ministry's next year's plans.

According to the minister of education all Afghans will have access to education in the next eleven years based on the new plan that the ministry has drafted.
